Bo's story is doled out to readers through his letters to broadcaster Larry King. He talked in considerable detail about his most recently published YA novel, Ironman, the story of Bo Brewster's struggle toward his goal of becoming a triathlete. Amidst the clatter of dishes and the aroma of bacon wafting from the buffet nearby, Chris regaled us with stories about his life and writing. My colleague, Kylene Beers, and I met with Chris over breakfast during the National Council of Teachers of English conference in San Diego last November. Even his adult bestseller, The deep end, provides readers total involvement in the life of its characters. Chris' uncompromising delivery of the truth (as he knows it, he would be quick to add) permeates his other works: Stotan! Chinese handcuffs, The crazy horse electric game, Staying fat for Sarah Byrnes and his latest novel for young adults, Ironman.
